Find a way to be creative and solve a musical problem or fulfill a musical need for somebody.

Composer & Podcast Host

When I was in school, I was excited to take the MBA-level entrepreneurship class offered by the university.  I hadn’t learned a lot of business skills for my music degree, and I knew that was something that would be important.

Well, as it turns out, the class basically spent the whole time looking at case studies and arguing about when is the right time to sell your company and step down as CEO.

Now, that’s one kind of entrepreneurship, but if you’re an independent composer or songwriter, you’re not looking for an exit from the business because you are the business.

You’re not looking for an exit from the business because you ARE the business.

But the most basic part of being an entrepreneur, looking to solve a problem or fulfill a need, is still important for self-publishers trying to make a name for themselves.

So when you’re deciding what to write and how to publish, if you can find a way to be creative and solve a musical problem or fulfill a musical need for somebody, then you’ll be much better positioned for success.
