This isn’t something that gets taught very well.  And I think one of the reasons people are hesitant to “go there” is because people automatically assume that if something is done quickly it’s not as good.  

But what most people miss is that the creative part of composition is only a small portion of the process.  Getting those ideas down on paper are what takes the most time.  And if you can get faster at THAT part of the process, you’ll get a lot faster at writing without sacrificing the artistic quality of your work.

For most of you that probably means getting more efficient in using notation software.  And sometimes it can be hard to justify taking the time to really dig deep in the software and learn what all those buttons do.  But it’s an investment that pays off over time.

As you are working on projects start paying attention to any mindless, repetitive tasks to keep coming back to, or any clunky workarounds that seem to take more time than they should.  And write them down, that way, when you’re in between projects and you have a little more breathing room you can research how to solve those problems.
