If you were to put one golden brick into a wall of normal regular red bricks, there’s no question which brick would catch your attention.

Composer & Podcast Host
This is a soapbox I’m borrowing from Ron Simpson, one of my professors in college who we recently lost to cancer.

Imagine you were looking at a wall made of golden bricks.  As awesome as that would be, no single brick would stand out.

But if you were to put one golden brick into a wall of normal regular red bricks, there’s no question which brick would catch your attention.

So, when you’re writing music, don’t try to cram everything you know into every piece.  Decide on one or maybe two things that will make it special and put your focus on that.  Maybe it’s something in the instrumentation, maybe it’s a harmonic rule you’ve decided to break, maybe it’s an usual time signature, just something to make it different.

Writing in this way will also help you market the piece because you’ll able to articulate what it is that makes the music special.
