It’s a lot easier to answer emails when you don’t have to read someone’s life story first.

I have yet to meet a successful person in the music industry who wasn’t insanely busy.

So if you want to increase your chances of getting a response keep your message short and sweet because it’s a lot easier to answer emails when you don’t have to read someone’s life story first.

As a general rule of thumb you really only need a couple of sentences when emailing someone for the first time.  One to say who you are, one to prove that you know who THEY are and you’re not just copy and pasting some generic cold call e-mail, and then a third to make your ask.  If you can work in a name drop of a mutual connection that’s even better.

While we’re at it, if you’re trying to share music with someone make it as painless as possible.  Most of the time a YouTube or Soundcloud link will work much better than any kind of email attachment.  Sometimes those are a pain to download, sometimes they even trigger spam filters and block your email altogether.
